What is a slipped disc in dogs?

A slipped disc (IVDD) occurs when material from inside an intervertebral disc protrudes and presses on the spinal cord or nerves. Chondrodystrophic breeds (e.g., Dachshunds, French Bulldogs, Shih Tzus) are often affected, but any dog can develop it. The consequences range from back pain to paralysis – early recognition is crucial.

Typical symptoms – how to recognize the warning signs

  • Stiff, unsteady gait or restricted mobility
  • Trembling/restlessness, especially when getting up or lying down
  • Avoidance of stairs, jumping, or playing
  • Pain sensitivity in the back area
  • Lameness/dragging of the hind paws
  • Problems with urination or defecation, leading to incontinence

Go to the vet/clinic immediately: sudden paralysis, loss of deep pain sensation, severe pain, acute incontinence/urinary retention.

Causes and risk factors for a slipped disc

The most common cause is disc degeneration (age, genetic predisposition). Other risk factors:

  • Obesity – additional strain on the spine
  • Breed-specific predisposition (e.g., Dachshund, Pug, Bulldog)
  • Early/intensive jumping or abrupt strain
  • Improper/over-exertion due to unsuitable activities

Diagnosis at the vet – what happens if a slipped disc is suspected

First, a neurological examination is performed (including a deep pain test). For precise localization, X-rays (screening), CT, or MRI are used depending on the case. This determines which disc is affected and whether conservative or surgical treatment is necessary.

Treatment options – conservative or surgery?

Conservative therapy (mild to moderate cases, deep pain sensation present):

  • Strict rest for usually 4–6 weeks (no jumping/stairs)
  • Vet-prescribed pain relievers/anti-inflammatories
  • Guided physical therapy, later controlled rebuilding of strength
  • Bladder management, if necessary

Surgical treatment (severe cases/no deep pain sensation/failed therapy):

  • Decompression of the spinal cord (e.g., hemilaminectomy)
  • Crucial: timely action in case of neurological deficits
Note: The prognosis for surgery is best when deep pain sensation is present. Without deep pain sensation, the chances are lower, but prompt surgery significantly improves the outlook.

How to manage daily life with a dog with a slipped disc

  • Non-slip environment (rug runners/anti-slip mats)
  • Ramps/steps instead of jumping onto the sofa/into the car
  • Controlled, consistent exercise instead of "weekend warrior" activities
  • Orthopedic bed, correct lifting (hands under chest and pelvis)
  • Weight control: a lean body condition score relieves pressure on the spine

Nutrition and supplements for back problems

Nutrition does not cure IVDD, but it can support regeneration and weight management:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids (e.g., algae oil) as nutritional support
  • Glucosamine and chondroitin – building blocks of joint cartilage/connective tissue
  • Collagen – supports ligaments, tendons, and disc structures
  • Vitamin E/C – antioxidant support

Important: Supplements are to be seen as additional to veterinary treatment. Always discuss them with your veterinarian.

FAQ

Is surgery always necessary?
No. Milder cases with existing deep pain often respond to strict rest, pain therapy, and physiotherapy. Without deep pain, the surgical prognosis is generally better than purely conservative treatment.

How long is crate rest necessary?
Usually about 4–6 weeks of strict rest, followed by a gradual increase in activity according to a plan.

Which breeds are particularly at risk?
Frequently affected: chondrodystrophic breeds such as Dachshunds, French Bulldogs, Pekingese, Shih Tzus, Basset Hounds. In principle, any dog can develop the condition.

When is it an emergency?
In case of sudden paralysis, severe pain, urinary retention/incontinence, or loss of deep pain sensation, please go to the veterinary clinic immediately.
