Kidney Insufficiency in Dogs: Nutrition for Chronic Kidney Disease

Table of Contents

Chronic kidney insufficiency in dogs is one of the more common age- or disease-related conditions. In this condition, the kidney gradually loses its filtering function, meaning that metabolic waste products can no longer be adequately excreted. The right diet plays an important role in relieving the kidneys and ensuring an adapted nutrient supply.

Feeding for chronic kidney insufficiency (CKI) aims to reduce the metabolic burden while ensuring an adequate supply of energy, vitamins, minerals, and high-quality protein.

Early Recognition of Symptoms of Kidney Insufficiency in Dogs

The symptoms of kidney insufficiency in dogs often develop gradually. Possible signs include:

  • Increased thirst and increased urination
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Dull coat, poor coat quality
  • Bad breath (uremic odor)

Important: These symptoms can also occur with other diseases. A veterinary examination is necessary to confirm the diagnosis and determine the stage of kidney disease.

Feeding Recommendations for Kidney Insufficiency

A special renal diet for dogs takes various aspects into account to support kidney function as best as possible:

  • Reduced phosphorus content: ≤ 5 g/kg complete feed with 12% moisture content.
  • Moderate crude protein content: ≤ 220 g/kg complete feed with 12% moisture content.
  • High-quality protein sources: highly digestible, highly available protein (≥ 85% digestibility recommended).
  • Balanced mineral supply: adjusted amounts of calcium, potassium, and sodium.
  • Essential fatty acids: for additional support (e.g., omega-3 fatty acids).
  • Supportive additives: such as lanthanum carbonate octahydrate to bind phosphorus in the intestine.

Important: Water should always be available for the dog to drink freely.

Feeding to reduce struvite stone formation

Struvite stones in dogs usually form in alkaline urine (pH > 7.0) and due to an increased concentration of magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate. The aim of nutrition is to lower urine pH (below 6.5) and reduce the concentration of these minerals to promote the dissolution of existing struvite crystals and prevent new ones.

Important measures:

  • Moderate magnesium content

  • Reduced phosphorus and ammonium content

  • Urine acidifying properties to lower pH (pH < 6.5)

🟥 Urine acidifying minerals:

  • Phosphorus

  • Chloride

  • Methionine

  • Cysteine

  • Sulcoat

🧠 These anions have an acidic effect, promote urine acidification, and help dissolve existing struvite stones or prevent their new formation. Controlled urine acidification is essential for therapy and prophylaxis.

Nutrition to reduce oxalate stone formation (relevant for existing struvite tendency)

After successful dissolution of struvite stones, excessive acidification can increase the risk of calcium oxalate stones. The goal is therefore to find a balance – i.e., a slightly acidic diet (pH around 6.1–6.5) to prevent struvite without promoting oxalate formation.

Recommended guidelines:

  • Balanced calcium content

  • No excessive acidification (pH not below 6.0)

  • Adjusted magnesium content (not too low to avoid oxalate formation)

  • High-quality, moderately protein-rich diet

🟩 Important points:
A slightly acidic urine is optimal to prevent struvite stones, while excessive acidification (pH < 6.0) should be avoided to prevent oxalate formation.
